Mazda announced on October 7, 2026 that its high-density microalgae biofuel research has been selected for NEDO's energy-saving technologies program. The project will examine the entire process, from algae cultivation to oil extraction.

HVO biodiesel production from these oils will be evaluated in cooperation with Idemitsu Kosan. Mazda says it is investigating microalgae because of its potential to reduce competition with food plants and land-use pressure; potential applications are still in development.

One of the goals is to use biodiesel as the first fill fuel in diesel Mazda vehicles produced in Japan in the early 2030s. This calendar is a research goal; This does not mean that all vehicles are delivered with this fuel today. Production scale and supply are the basic conditions for practical application.
