BMW has detailed its Design for Circularity approach to resource use and recycling of the i3. The goal is to reduce material diversity in parts, increase the share of secondary content and facilitate disassembly at the end of use.

The front bumper trim contains 30 percent recycled plastic. The total number of different materials in the bumper, excluding mounted inserts, is reduced to seven from 15 in the previous 3 Series. BMW reports that the proportion of recyclable plastic has increased to approximately 85 percent.

The upper surface of the Econeer seat fabric in the Essential equipment uses completely recycled PET. The company also calculates the life cycle emission advantage of the electric model; It clearly states that this comparison depends on annual mileage, power system and source of charging electricity.
