Construction of the line that will connect BMW Leipzig to the hydrogen network has started

The approximately two kilometer connection is planned to be commissioned in the first half of 2028. The line will supply hydrogen specifically for energy-intensive paint drying processes.

Construction has started on the pipeline that will connect BMW's Leipzig factory to the hydrogen network. The approximately two kilometer connection is planned to be completed and put into operation in the first half of 2028. The project receives co-financing from Saxony and the European Regional Development Fund.

The facility has been using hydrogen in internal logistics since 2013. According to the statement, there are more than 230 fuel cell forklifts and tractors in the fleet. In the paint shop, 11 dual-fuel furnaces that can switch between natural gas and hydrogen operate.

The new connection aims to increase the use of hydrogen in processes that require high temperatures, such as paint drying. BMW focuses on energy efficiency and production emissions. The start of construction does not mean that the line is delivering hydrogen at full capacity today.
