BMW field tested hydrogen-burning truck in Leipzig logistics

The 18-tonne truck will first supply the exterior body parts department. In the project, a piston internal combustion engine is used instead of a hydrogen fuel cell.

Daily operational tests of the 18-ton hydrogen-powered truck have started at BMW's Leipzig factory. The vehicle burns hydrogen in a piston engine based on diesel technology. This setup is not the same technology as the electricity generation system of a fuel cell truck.

In the first phase, the truck will carry materials to the exterior components department, where plastic parts such as bumpers and spoilers are produced. In the second stage, it is planned to ship parts from the same department just in time for vehicle assembly.

The testing program includes long routes and three-shift work around the facility. BMW considers the short refueling time as a usability advantage; He also states that appropriate hydrogen station infrastructure is necessary. The statement describes a project that will test field use.
