For 40 years of the M3, BMW has published a dossier evaluating the road and racing history of six generations. The first car was shown at the 1985 Frankfurt motor show. The 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine produced 147 kW, that is, 200 hp.
The second generation, which arrived in 1992, switched to an inline six cylinder. The model family has expanded with sedans as well as coupés and convertibles. The BMW statement also lists the sequential SMG transmission, offered since 1996, among the technical changes of this period.
The 3.2-liter engine of the third generation in 2000 was followed by the 4.0-liter naturally aspirated V8 of the fourth generation in 2007. The anniversary narrative shows with concrete technical examples that the M3 name covers changing engine and body options in different periods.
