For the 95th birthday of former engine developer Valentin Schäffer, Porsche published a dossier describing his technical career. Born on October 8, 1931, Schäffer started working as an engine mechanic at Porsche in 1955.
He completed his technician and mastership exams in 1961. His work ranges from small four-cylinder racing engines to twelve-cylinder layouts. The company cites workshop experience where parts are disassembled and measured as part of its development approach.
The Type 547/2 study in 1956 involved the four-cylinder engine of the Porsche 550A RS Spyder. He then took part in the Type 753 and 771 eight-cylinder engine projects. The file explains with historical examples the combination of engine design and test track experience in the same development process.
